General Conference and Update

This has been a great weekend to be home with Laneah and Karina to watch General Conference. I feel spiritually uplifted and ready to do what is right! I know we all do.

Life in Arizona is great. The weather is finally starting to cool down a little bit. Work is keeping me busy with trash collection route implementation, a new recycling pilot program to begin at the end of this month, economic development research, and others. I love my job, and it is so nice to feel like I am making a difference.

Karina recently began teaching ESL part time for the county. I am so happy that she can spread her wings and continue her professional development. She is a great teacher, and I know she will impact many people's lives in our community.

Karina and Laneah are, as always, the love of my life. I love knowing that when I get home, they are there and excited to see me, and I am excited to see them.

Church is also keeping us busy. We have the missionaries over for a dinner about once a week, Karina is working in the Young Women's group, and I am the assistant executive secretary. There is no doubt in our minds that this is where the Lord wants us to be at this time. He lives and loves us, and knows what is best for us.

On a day like today, Aaron and I got married in the DC temple! It has four years full of all sorts of adventures, laughs, wonderful memories and abundant love. It's the kind of love that I cannot fully explain in writing. I love him more than I did four years ago. I'm one lucky girl for sure. He is a wonderful husband, an excellent father, my #1 fan, a righteous man, and my best friend. Sorry girls, he is all ours :)

Un dia como hoy, Aaron y yo nos casamos en el templo de Wash. DC! Ha sido cuatro anos llenos de todo tipo de aventuras, risas, maravillosos recuerdos y abundante amor. Es el tipo de amor que no puedo expresar por escrito. Lo amo mucho mas que hace cuatro anos. Soy una chica afortunada de seguro. El es un maravilloso esposo, un excelente papa, mi fan #1, un hombre correcto y mi mejor amigo. Lo siento chicas, pero El es todo nuestro (mio y de Laneah) :)

We both have grown immensely these four years, and will continue to learn for the rest of our lives. We both have accomplished much these four years (but that's another post!). But most of all we have learned to rely on Heavenly Father fully and understand his will. Our priorities have changed specially with Laneah around. However, she makes our lives complete and full of joy!

Hemos crecido muchos estos cuatro anos y seguiremos aprendiendo el rest de nuestras vidas. Hemos logrado mucho estos cuatro anos (pero sera otro post). Pero mas que todo hemos aprendido a confiar en el Padre Celestial plenamente y entender su voluntad. Nuestras prioridades han cambiado especialmente con Laneah. Sin embargo, ella hace nuestras vidas completa y llenas de gozo!

Valentines in April?/ San Valentin en abril?

I forgot to post our valentine's adventure, so here it is! We decided to make Valentine's day a bit more special this year (mainly for Laneah). Aaron and I went on a date sans our princess and we had a blast. Thanks to my wonderful sis-in-law Anna. We ate our favorite Chinese food and then saw a movie at the movie theater.

Olvide compartir nuestra aventura del dia de San Valentin, aqui les va. Decidimos que lo hariamos un poco especial mas por Laneah. Aaron y yo tuvimos una cita sin la princesa y nos divertimos a lo grande. Gracias a mi cunada maravillosa Anna por cuidar a Laneah ese dia. Comimos comida china y luego fuimos al cine.

But Valentine's without Laneah is just not complete! I wanted something that would involve her more and make her excited for Valentines. We decorated the house with hearts, bought paper plates with heart decoration and our menu had a heart theme as well. I found this great, and easy recipe for pizza (chicken fajita heart shaped pizza) and heart shaped pink rice krispies. Laneah loves rice krispies and Aaron is a pizza lover.

Pero el dia de San Valentin sin Laneah no esta completo! Queria algo que la involucre a ella y la emocione por el dia festivo. Decoramos la casa con corazones de papel, compramos platos descartables con corazones y el menu tenia corazones por todos lados tambien. Encontre una receta facil y buena para hacer una pizza de pollo estilo fajita. De postre tuvimos una mezcla de un cereal de arroz mezclado con bonbon derretido (que se llama rice krispies aca). A Laneah le encanta los rice krispies y Aaron muere por la pizza.

Everything was so yummy!! We had a lot of fun and we had Anna over as well. Valentine's day is not just for couples, but the whole family. I'm looking forward to next year's Valentines Day fun.

Si hay mucho que actualizar, pero sera para la proxima. Laneah y Yo tuvimos un dia perfecto y nos gustaria compartirles aquella experiencia.

Yes, there is much to say and catch up, but It'll be another post. Laneah and I had a perfect day and we'd like to share it with you.

Nos vamos a mudar y empacar parece lo unico que hacemos en casa. Entonces para cambiar la rutina, decidimos que Laneah y yo ibamos a tener una cita (nosotras solas) en lugar muy especial, la manzana del templo de Salt Lake City.

We are moving, and packing seems to be the only thing we do around the house. Therefore, to change the pace a bit, we decided that Laneah and I would go on a date to a special place....temple square in Salt Lake.

La pasamos super, super, super bien. Laneah estaba tan atenta, reverente y feliz. Hablamos de los templos y lo que sucede alli. Estaba fascinada con todos lo que podia ver, y los comerciales.

We had a great time. she was very attentive, reverent and just happy. We talked about temples and how special these places are. She was fascinated with everything we could do, and the church ads.

Luego fuimos a ver la estatua de Cristo. Laneah me dijo, Jesus esta feliz. Que lugar tan sagrado es la manzana del templo. Estoy agradecida de haber servido una mision ahi. Se que la mision no es para todos, pero que agradecida estoy que yo tuve ese privilegio. Ese dia fue perfecto. Siempre quize ir con laneah sola y decirle lo que aprendi y lo especial que la manzana del templo es para mi. Que alegria me da haberlo hecho antes que nos vayamos!

Then we went to see the Christus and Laneah said: Jesus is happy. Temple square is a sacred place. I'm grateful for having served a mission there. I know missions are not for everyone, but I'm glad I had a privilege to serve one. It was a perfect day! I've meaning to go with Laneah alone and tell her what I learned there and how special Temple square is specially to me.

Just trying to catch up!

So much has happened since the last time we updated our blog. We celebrated Laneah's birthday. Thanks to everyone who came. We had a blast and Laneah was the happiest 2 year old that day! My mom flew from Peru to be with our princess. Grandma Emilia (or as Laneah says ''paapi" for abuelita )and laneah have a special bond.

She was in Utah for a little over a month. We loved hanging out with her, eating her yummy food (which I personally miss so much), going shopping, laughing, doing zumba and just having her around. I'm glad I had time to play and I was not working like last year. It's hard to see her leave (specially for me and Laneah). We miss her a lot and wish she lived closer.

Mucho ha pasado desde la ultima vez que escribimos en nuestro blog. Celebramos el cumple de Laneah. Gracias a todos los que pudieron venir. Laneah fue la nina mas feliz ese dia. Hasta mi mama vino de Peru para estar con nuestra princesa. Ellas tienen una relacion especial. Mi mama se quedo en Utah por poco mas de un mes.

Nos encanta tenerla aca y poder disfrutar de ella, comer su rica comida (la cual extrano mucho), ir de compras, reir con ella, hacer zumba y simplemente tenerla cerca. Que bueno que tuve el tiempo ya que no estoy trabajando ahora asi como su ultima visita y asi pudimos disfrutar su estadia mas. Es dificil cuando se va (especialmente para mi y Laneah), la extranamos mucho y desearia que viviera cerca.

It is time to update our neglected blog. There's so much to say that I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.

I'll do my best and not neglect our blog. We celebrated my birthday, Aaron's birthday, our 3rd anniversary. We also took a few road trips! We went to Colorado Springs and had a blast with Jenny penny and the Blacks and we even got to go to VEGAS baby! We loved our last minute trip to Vegas. It was fun to visit the places where Aaron served his mission. It brought great memories for both us since we both served in very poor areas. Last but not least, Sweet Drew's blessing plus family and friends in town equals fun fun fun!

We've been having lots of fun and enjoying Laneah to the fullest. Check out her dancing moves! She is such a doll and I love being her mom!

I have been working on this project/present for Aaron for about two months now. I'm not done, the decorating and pretty part i meant. The actual writing I've had for about two months. I just have to put the project together, most of the pieces are done and my goal is to finish it next week. We have been busy lately. However, I wanted to share with and the world some of the reasons why I LOVE Aaron! I hope you understand since it's in Spanish..ask me for a translation later if you want :)

Valentine's day and Aaron

We had a great weekend. Roxy had a little present for us (a Maria Bonita Mexican Grill gift card) and we used later on that day to celebrate Valentine's day. Maria Bonita Mexican Grill was wonderful and even Laneah was full. She was feeling sick and had a bit of a temperature, so she was part of our date. We didn't mind at all. She is way too cute! :)
But I should probably say that Aaron made breakfast for us that day, he is cute like that! And he wrote the most adorable poem for moi..thanks amorcito! i love you hartoooo hartoooo!

My Guardian Angel

For those of you who don't know, I don't walk well! I have neuropathy, so I can't feel my feet very well. I have great difficulty just doing simple things: picking up Laneah, taking out the trash, etc. Needless to say, it's been very frustrating.

Luckily, I have my guardian angel with me to help me with everything: Karina! She has been so amazing as she picks up so much of the slack around the house. She does everything I can't, and I am so grateful to her for all her support. I don't know how I could live without her.

THANK YOU KARINA! I pray the Lord will continue to bless you with added and continued strength. Hopefully my treatments will be begin soon, and I will return to dancing, picking you up, and helping make our life together the treasure you have made it for me.

just an update

It's been pretty busy around here!!! I can't wait for Finals to END and I'm sure Aaron agrees with me. Laneah is doing very well. She starting to communicate and interact more. She is just a cutie, always happy, smiling and growing way too fast. What a blessing she is in our lives. I can't imagine our lives without her.

Thanksgiving was wonderful, lots of fun and visiting with the family. We went to Temple square and saw the lights, but the best was the limo ride to Temple square. Thank you Sarah and Ty for being great host. You guys are awesome and to the rest of the family Thank you as well for everything you do.

Of course, Laneah turned 1 in October and loved her birthday party especially the candy from the piñata! A HUGE thank you to the Rivera and Vega Family for all of their help that day. The piñata was awesome. Also for Halloween, Laneah was the cutest ladybug, thanks to her aunt Sarah. Well, that's all for now.

We have so many things to be grateful for: family, jobs, school, health, a home, testimonies, love, etc.

I am especially grateful for food! I love playing around in the kitchen and trying out new recipes. On Saturday, we made Turkey with Herbes de Provence...a Giada de Laurentis special. So, we cooked the turkey that Karina got from Nu Skin; I guess it's some kind of employee appreciation token. We didn't have room in our freezer to keep it frozen, so we decided to cook it instead.

We filled the turkey cavity with limes, oranges, sage, and other herbs. I then made a rub of butter, olive oil, salt and pepper, and the Herbes de Provence (a nice combination of "Provincial Herbs"). We rubbed it all around and under the skin. Up to that point, we were great. Then I decided to deviate a bit, and I put some lime slices between the skin and flesh of the turkey. I don't know if Giada would have approved, but I remember seeing Jim do it a few Thanksgivings ago.

We cooked the turkey with chicken broth in the pan, and then added more broth after about an hour of cooking. After a few more hours of cooking, we took our Big Bird out of the oven. It smelled pretty good! And in fact, the turkey was good, all except the skin above the lime wedges....it was super bitter. Now I know not to put the citrus slices there. Also, the Herbes de Provence appeared a little bitter as well. Next time, I will probably not put as much of the herbs and put a tad more salt.

We invited Kenny and his family to join us for dinner. We had salad and garlic mashed potatoes. We made the gravy from the pan drippings. It seemed like it all turned out well. We will have turkey for a week!

When Danella saw we were having turkey, she asked, "Why are we having Thanksgiving today?" My own answer, in my head, is that Thanksgiving is everyday! Despite our challenges, we can always be grateful for the simple things in our life...the ability to walk, to imagine and to create, to analyze, to study, and to speak the things of our hearts. I have learned that as challenges come, we must focus on what we can do, on what we have control over. We can control our mindsets, facing each challenge as an opportunity to learn and to grow. That's what we will be doing over the next few months as I am hopefully healed from my neuropathy.

Thanks Danella for remembering that yesterday, today, and tomorrow are always days of Thanksgiving!

Aaron and scripture of the day

The scripture of the day started while Aaron and I were getting to know each other. We were just friends and not dating exclusively. I thought of the scripture of the day because I wanted to get to know the real Aaron, and also (don't tell him) I wanted to have an excuse to talk to him :) every day. When it was my turn, I shared a scripture and then I explained why I liked the scripture and what thoughts came to my mind as I was reading/studying it. Then when it was Aaron turn, he would do the same.

Every other day one of us had to share the scripture of the day. Let me tell you, I looked forward to this time of the day with great anticipation. We could share it at any specific time, it just had to be during that day, and it could be a verse or a chapter if you wanted to. I looked forward to hear Aaron's scripture of the day, I was always inspired by his testimony, his love for God and his willingness to obey. Now that i look back, the scripture of the day opened many doors for me. For instance, our conversations were always meaningful, and we could talk about anything (even girlie things). Due to our conversations, we got to know each other very well and there was no room for pretending. I love that!. More than anything, i got to know Aaron's soul and fell in love with the real Aaron ( I LOVE him more and more each day. I'm so blessed to have the best husband!..cheesy... i know but true).

We kept sharing the scripture of the day throughout our entire courtship and engagement. We kept at it for a few months after we were married. But then we both got really busy and did our personal study on our own.
However, "the scripture of the day" is back! During the week, our time is so limited and we hardly get to see each other. The scripture of the day is helping us know exactly what's going on in our hearts and minds even when we are away from each other, just like old times.

Try it, it's wonderful....

Every once in a while, I get awestruck by Karina. I don't know what I did to deserve such a wonderful woman!

Karina makes everything work in our family. Our crazy and busy schedule is somehow coordinated because she makes it work. She sacrifices so much so our family can be happy. I know she wants a career, and I want one for her as well! Yet she is willing to put that on hold while we start a family and I go to school. Thank you, Karina. Your sacrifice is seen and a thousand times appreciated.

Karina is the best mother in the world! I can tell by the look in Laneah's face. When Karina came home yesterday, Laneah started jumping and yelling for her mom. Karina picked her up, and Laneah embraced her so tightly. When Karina handed Laneah back to me, she started crying and did not stop until Karina picked her up again. I love seeing them interact together. Karina has such a talent for teaching, and I am so happy she teaches Laneah full time. Laneah is going to be far ahead of the curve when she begins school thanks to her mom.

Most importantly, Karina is my best friend. I can trust her with anything. I love being with her, holding her hand, and getting a big hug and kiss! I feel warm around her, and she makes me want to be better. I'm not always getting better though, and Karina still supports me and encourages me through the trials. Her smile, laugh, and look of love penetrate my soul and fills it with happiness and light.

Karina, I love you! Thank you for being the best wife I could have. Thank you for your patience, love, concern, example, and hard work. And I'll say it again: I LOVE YOU!

It was two years ago that we got married (7/14/2007). It has been two wonderful years!! I love, trust, admire, and respect Aaron more and more each day and vice versa. First, we went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple open house with Anna and The Thackeray's. What a gorgeous temple!!

We celebrated Aaron's birthday a day late this year!!! I was planning a surprise party!! But a week ealier, he said: I just want a barbecue with friends and family! So he got want he wanted.!!! It was nice to visit with friends and family and enjoy the kiddos.

A few weeks ago, Laneah learned the concept of putting things in her mouth. Everything went down hill from there!! If she can grab it, she'll put it in her mouth. So she wants her fruits cut up in big chunks and feed herself!! It's so cute to see her being so independent. She is not so fond of baby food, she'd rather have our food. She is growing too fast!!!

Welcome back to Utah

The moving truck was big and slow, and man did it eat the gas! But, we arrived in Utah on Friday night without any problems, unloaded the truck with help from good friends and family, and now we're getting settled in. Thanks to the Kingston and Handy families, we got the truck all loaded up, the car on the tow trailer and attached to the moving truck. I could not have done it myself.

The heat here is something new for Laneah. She gets a little red in the face, but is now acclimating to the new weather. We enjoyed the first couple days with friends and family, and now we're back into real life...school, work, laundry, dishes, shopping, cleaning, and generally loving life!

May 2009 Update

May has been a busy month for us. Karina has been interpreting at medical appointments, and I have been the chauffeur and babysitter.

We enjoyed a day at the beach in Ocean Shores, Washington with our friends, Dan and Chelsea Kingston, on May 16. It was a beautiful day, but a little windy on the coast.

The Boy Scouts earned their merit badges and rank advancements at the court of honor held May 13. Way to go boys!

She arrived! On Friday, October 24, 2008, Karina's water broke, we went to the hospital, and a few hours later, at 8:10 AM, Laneah was born. She is healthy and big, weighing in at 9 lbs 2 oz. She has lots of dark hair, a cute chin, and a round face. She has lost a little weight now after leaving the hospital, which is normal.

Mom and Laneah are doing well. Karina's recovering well from the C-Section. Stubborn little Laneah didn't want to rotate and was breech the last month of the pregnancy. No worry though, the important thing is that they are OK.

We're now home after a 4 day stint at the hospital over the weekend. It's nice to be back in familiar surroundings, but we miss the room service and the on call nurse! We had a few friends stop by while we were in the hospital to cheer up our day. Everyone thinks Laneah's so cute, and so do we.

Thank you to everyone who joined in fasting and prayers on behalf of Karina and our little girl, Laneah. Because she hasn't rotated yet, we have scheduled a C-Section. She will be born on Monday, October 27, 2008 at 7:45 AM. That is of course as long as everything else goes as planned and Karina doesn't go into labor before hand. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as the big day gets closer!

Welcome to Washington

As you all probably know by now, Karina and I moved to Olympia Washington in mid July. It was a great way to celebrate our one year anniversary--driving a moving truck to a new place to begin our new life. I guess it was symbolic in a way. After a year of marriage, we were beginning a new life all over again!

I accepted a job with the Washington State Senate, working as the legislative assistant to Senator Pam Roach. (pamroachreport.blogspot.com) The job is quite an undertaking as I learn how to maneuver my way around the Washington State Senate. I work closely with the Senator doing what needs to be done to make sure the people of the 31st legislative district are served. This legislature is a bit different than the Utah State Legislature where I interned earlier this year, but my brief experience in Salt Lake helped prepare me for the adventures ahead in Olympia.

Karina is now 7 months pregnant and we're getting excited about our little baby girl who will be named Laneah. (the name of the principal actress in "The Testaments" movie shown on Temple Square). Laneah likes to talk to us by way of taps and other movements on mommy's tummy. It's fun to see her move. She's especially communicative when Karina has not eaten for a while or if Laneah does not like Karina's position. I can't wait to see Laneah, get to hold her, and watch her grow.

Karina and I are starting to get to know people around the apartment complex, the church ward, and at work. We've gotten to be good friends with the Hernandez family from the ward. It's nice to know you have a friend nearby in case anything happens.
